When someone you love is diagnosed with dementia as a caregiver your own life gets turned inside out as well. In fact probably even more as the caregiver. But really who knows? All of us are having our own experiences through our personal realities. Who are any of us to say what's real or not real in any given moment for anyone else.
For me poetry and music have been consistent ways to examine emotions and personal growth the experience gifts me. Recently, I have found myself, once again, pulling at the threads my emotions through poetry. Some how by placing one word next to another I am able to find peace with grief. But even more powerful, I have been able to unravel the gift of the journey.
Here are two of my most recent poems:
a cardinal rests
it’s frozen reflection
~ encapsulated
your colorful life stilled
in a lake of memories
A Wish for Change
III
A simple wish for change
in 2013 that we never forget
where we have been
while grasping the potential
of where we could be
and what we could become.
To live in love
and love in life untethered
from fears hidden in darkness.
A wish for change
that no child is afraid
to learn, to grow, to be.
A wish for change
that no school has to be
armed to be safe.
A wish for change
that violence
is known only in history.
A wish for change
that shouting yields
to talking.
A wish for change
that compassion, empathy,
and service are universal norms.
In all of this is a wish of change
for our world, for our nations
for you, and for me in 2013.

To live in love
and love in life untethered…not a bad way to live at all…that the children could live unafraid is for me a big thing as well…sounds like a wish i could hope for as well…smiles.
Thank you Brian for taking the the time to read. When I was in school I only had to worry about the odd teacher that abused their power. My nieces and nephews don’t have it so good.
