Mindful Writing Challenge: Day 15

Witnesses

Among the feather flurry
the dogwood and I stand
witnesses to incidence.

Impatient you chase the others
from each suet cage
a colorful pandemonium

First the male downy
then the female.

At an empty cage the nut hatch has a go
but no, you must have that too.

Intimidating the Jay the sparrows know
there’s no way they are going to get pass.

Your yellow tail tucked as you nibble
the tree fills with noisy protests.

Only the cardinal sits
in silence dissents.

The dogwood holds up its arms
I just stare. I have not spied
a Northern Flicker at the tree before.

Mindful Writing Challenge: Day 13

Mindful of 13

Mindful of 13
on this 13th day of January,
13th days into writing mindfully
waiting for the sun to warm the earth
beyond the 13 degrees
night has left me with shivering.

Mindful Writing Challenge: Day 12

Today’s Small Stone is in honor of my cousin Judy on her birthday. I can believe it has been almost a year.

Judy’s Ripple

In life’s lake you are the stone
that skipped and scuttled
dancing ripples on it’s watery skin.
In your trace, the sun sparkled
wave tips across the pond of life
you made it to the other end
but too soon, we lost you my friend.

Mindful Writing Challenge: Day 11

Today’s Small Stone was inspired by Christine Yablonski’s Small Stone (Thank You!)

Before Dawn

Today’s observation comes
light through small cracks.

Early hours and clouds hold daybreak
behind a dark gate unseen.

The day will be one of play
maybe see some art on display.

Sights and sounds gently stir
under sky’s dark cloak.

School bus lights shine through a window’s crack
It parks here and waits every day.

A jay calls, a dog barks, in the park
the family of hawks hunt for prey.

Among the dark our house glows
light leaks through the blinds small cracks.

Anticipation worn like a model’s robe
our first glimpse of the day reveal
But its story still untold.

Mindful Writing Challenge: Day 10

A Downy Gift

In little chirps
like squeaky shoes in the rain
a downy woodpecker gives gratitude
for the suet cakes that hang
in green baskets from a leafless dogwood tree.
A gift to share while the smell of rain
erases the snow that lies in decay.

Mindful Writing Challenge: Day 9

A Monet Morning

Over a field budding winter
dawn dresses in sepia.
Limestone lies bright
at the foot of naked trees.
Hawks watch for prey
under lavender-blue sky.
In this light Monet
would love to play.
