Among the feather flurry
the dogwood and I stand
witnesses to incidence.
Impatient you chase the others
from each suet cage
a colorful pandemonium
First the male downy
then the female.
At an empty cage the nut hatch has a go
but no, you must have that too.
Intimidating the Jay the sparrows know
there’s no way they are going to get pass.
Your yellow tail tucked as you nibble
the tree fills with noisy protests.
Only the cardinal sits
in silence dissents.
The dogwood holds up its arms
I just stare. I have not spied
a Northern Flicker at the tree before.
