Whistling the tea kettle spits
it’s readiness into blue flames.
Hot water and bubbles breach
high sides of the kitchen sink.
Muddy paws circle the ankles
of the reuniting.
Surrounded by forget-me-nots
a rose petal releases and quivers
at the door as the bouquet slumps.
The ‘Forgive me’ and ‘I’m sorry’ chorus
are the only concerns.
