What do you suppose a flower thinks
of the inquisitive butterfly or bee?
What do you suppose a flower hears
it’s head bobbing in the wind?
What do you suppose a flower sees
in the photographer’s macro lens?
And for that matter
would the flower trouble itself
over opinions of you or me?
When the beauty of a flower
is simply to be.

Beauty is in and beyond the eye of the beholder. It is simply to be. Truly perceptive conclusion, Delaina, one that packs a punch with poetic euphoria!
Poetics aside, it’s a tremendously thought-provoking topic: Is the flower aware of its beauty? Without the lens and opinions, what defines beauty from non-beauty? What if our culture and history were always revolted by flowers the way we do with cockroaches? (Is beauty intrinsic?) Why does beauty matter?
While it doesn’t make sense the other way (only if I were some hardcore postmodernist thinker, which I am not), neither can I stop the questions from popping up … unless I put my mind into simply adoring the flower, the poem … and the beauty in them all.
Thank you for reading and leaving such a great comment Colin.
Yes I was using the flower as a metaphor for to encourage and simpler and kinder perspective of ourselves and other.
Cheers!
Just simply be ~ We can learn a lot from nature ~
Yeah right?! Thank you for reading and commenting Grace. 🙂
This is so wonderful. I love the idea of nature teaching us to just be and not to be concerned with what other people think.
YES! Thank you Jenna that was exactly what I was thinking.
Thank you for reading and commenting.
I think that flowers care so much less about us… and rightly so. Maybe we should listen to the flower though
My thoughts exactly Bjorn.
Thank you for hosting tonight. Enjoy your silence. <3
Secure in the fact that it’s lovely and adored, I’m sure the flower worries about little. Lovely words!
Thank you Bev. Yes worrying less and judging less were the main thoughts behind the poem.
Thanks for commenting and reading.
simply beautiful 🙂 🙂
Thank you, and thank you for freeing and commenting.
I suppose the flower is looking forward to the butterfly and bee, but those other things might not matter as much. Simply to be is also a delight.
Right you Frank! Simple to be is the key. Thanks for reading and commenting.
Beautiful! We can learn a lot from nature. Thanks for the beautiful poem.
Thank you Mom, I’m glad you like the poem. We will always have our love of nature. <3
